Facebook is growing at a rapid rate, signing up around 100 000 new members per day. Here are some interesting facts about the popular social networking website.
Early Days
–Facebook was started in February 2004
– In the beginning, the membership was restricted to students of Harvard University. It was subsequently expanded to other Boston area schools, Stanford, and all Ivy League schools within two months
– On August 23, 2005, Aboutface Corporation sold the domain name facebook.com to Facebook for $200,000
– The name of the site refers to the paper facebooks depicting members of the campus community that US colleges and preparatory schools give to incoming students, faculty, and staff.
–The website is built on PHP-MySQL and is the second most-trafficked PHP site in the world
Basic Facts
–Facebook has over 300 employees
–The website has 31 Million active users
–More than 100,000 new registrations per day since Jan. 2007
–An average of 3 percent weekly growth since Jan. 2007
–Active users have doubled since Facebook expanded registration in Sept. 2006
–The site receives over 15 billion page views per month
–It currently hosts over 1.7 Billion photos
Facebook finances
–Facebook received ‘three rounds’ of funding : $500,000 from Peter Thiel in the Summer 2004, $12.7 million from Accel Partners in April 2005 and $25 million from Greylock Partners
– In April 2006, revenue was rumored to be over $1.5 million per week
–The company already rejected a $975 million offer for the site
– Peter Thiel, a board member of Facebook, indicated that Facebook’s internal valuation is around $8 billion based on their projected revenues of $1 billion by 2015

facebook is so sticky its not surprising its a hit. i love it too! However lets not forget myspace before facebook, or twitter, before digg before myspace or the flavor of the month, linkedin, before that
The question is not whether they’re awesome or hotly valued – it’s whether they can sustain the resonance with consumers they currently have and are seekign to attract.

i want to thank face book i met a guy 2 years ago was with him for 3 weeks lost contact and QUESS WHAT FOUND HIM AGAIN ON FACE BOOK. He is in london and I am in South Africa.
We have been phoning each other every day and leave messages on facebook. So sorry for all yo people who does not have a live and want to delete face book !!!!!!!!! Face book gave me back my life

this one is for Tanya Bezuidenhoud. Firstly I have no problem with chat sites like facebook, but to say that a person that wants to delete facebook has no life? Come on. Do u mean to tell me that u need something like facebook to have a life? And to u call talking to someone out of reach having a life, thats not life if anything thats death! No offence Tanya but what if u find out the truth-that the u are chating to in London is seeing someone there or worse he is married. does that mean life ends now? I dont want to blow your buzz get real and get a real life.
