Coolest Tech Jobs

Share This May 14th, 2009 Tom

Tech Radar recently compiled a list of the ’10 coolest jobs in tech’ and although they might not be what some may consider realistic or even possible they are certainly interesting.

1) Astronaught

The idea of a job as an astronaught has been romanticised ever since man started exploring space in the early 1960’s. Today one has to be a brilliant scientist, an expert pilot or preferably both to achieve the dream of experiencing zero gravity.

2) Computer games tester

“Quality assurance testers” as they are referred to within the industry, ensure that each and every game that is released to the wider market is checked for faults and bugs within the system.

It is a job that requires talent and skill as a gamer as well as a keen eye for detail.

3) Secret Service R&D

Recently M15 advertised for a “Chief Scientific Advisor” although the only qualification required is that the applicant must be over 18 and a British Citizen. It is unclear exactly what this job would entail although it is reasonable to assume that whomever they offer the job to will be highly qualified.

4) Inferno Artist

These are the men and women that make Hollywood movies come alive with CGI effects, often through the use of Autodesk’s Inferno software. Without them action and sci fi movies today would be less remarkable.

5) Gadget Reviewer

Gadget reviewers get to test and write about the most up to date and technologically interesting releases for publications all around the globe. Although to some it may seem simple to write a few words about a new netbook or iPhone having the background knowledge to do so is imperative.

6) Pro Computer Gamer

These gamers make their living going from LAN to LAN conquering other players in popular multiplayer games such as Call of Duty 4: Modern War. 2008 saw 3 million people tune in to streamed sessions from Major League Gaming which arguably makes gaming today a highly popular, widely followed sport.

7) Entrepreneur

“This is the job where it is possible to be both cool and a nerd” said Tech Radar. With past luminaries such as Bill Gates and Skype founders Niklaas Zennstrom and Janus Friis who wouldn’t want to be an entrepreneur?

8 ) Formula One Control Systems Engineer

Formula One employs hundreds of highly qualified, technologically orientated individuals to keep the race on track behind the scenes. A Formula One systems engineer gets to travel the world ensuring that both driver and machine work as one unit during the race.

9) Sex Toy Designer

Although this may seem the last place one would expect to end up it must be said that even the sex industry needs its token technology enthusiasts to design these toys. Ethan Imboden founder, chairman and chief creative officer of Jimmyjane (a sex toy manufacturer) helped develop an ultra high DNA sequencer and worked as a design consultant to Ford, Motorola and Dell before starting his own business.

10) Technology Evangelist

A professional technology evangelist is paid to share his or her enthusiasm over a new product with anyone who will listen or read their personal blog. Tech Radar argues that Mike Boich was the “first of the breed” who led the Mac evangelism responsible for what he claims to be its enduring relationship with Microsoft.
