Japan leads broadband speed race, SA struggling

Japan emerged as the leading country in a broadband speed test survey, conducted online at Speedtest.net, with South Africa struggling to compete against the top African countries.

The Speedtest.net website allows users to evaluate the speed of their Internet connection and then records the results from various countries and Internet Service Providers.

Japan is the top country in the speed department with an average downlink speed of 9982 Kbps. It is followed by Sweden with 7304 Kbps and Latvia with 6251 Kbps.

The rest of the Top 10 is completed by Romania, Bulgaria, Netherlands, France, United States, Germany and Singapore.

Continents

North America leads the continent race with an average downlink speed of 4181 Kbps. It is followed by Europe and Australasia both sitting at 3388 Kbps.

Asia and South America are fourth and fifth respectively with Africa finishing last with an average speed of 592 Kbps.

Africa

The Indian Ocean island of Reunion is leading the African race with an average download speed of 1268 Kbps. It is followed by Morocco with 1126 Kbps and Libya with 635 Kbps.

South Africa produced the fourth highest result in Africa with an average downlink speed of 623 Kbps.

Internet Solutions is placed third in the list of African ISPs according to this speed test website. Telkom is listed as the sixth fastest ISP, followed by Verizon South Africa in seventh place and MWEB coming in at number eight.
