MTN launches MXit competitor

MTN has launched noknok – its own real-time messaging service that competes directly against services like MXit.

MTN’s noknok allows subscribers to chat in real time, join chatrooms, create their own private chatrooms and share picture files.

Noknok can be used on either a mobile phone or a PC. The noknok PC application allows pictures, files and voice recordings, as well as SMS and MMS from a PC.

Noknok allows subscribers to “chat” to other MTN customers who are not on noknok, by delivering an SMS and allows them to respond via SMS into your noknok conversation.

Users are encouraged to invite friends to the service with rewards like free airtime and movie tickets.

MTN noknok went live on the 3rd of December and the company says that it currently has thousands of active users.

For the duration of the promotion period, which ends 01 March 2008, MTN customers will only be charged standard data rates. The noknok service as well as all off-line message delivery via SMS will be free of charge.
