Deal with BlackBerry means that MXit users can now send messages for free over BIS network

MXit recently announced that it has added Facebook to its gateway offering, effectively enabling the approximately 2-million Facebook users in South Africa to interact with their Facebook contacts via the MXit platform of over 14 million SA users.  MXit users can also access Yahoo, Windows Live Messenger, G Talk, AIM and ICQ via gateways on MXit.

Good news for BlackBerry (BB) subscribers is that they can now use BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) to connect to MXit which means that all data charges are already included in their BlackBerry subscription, effectively making MXit messaging entirely free.

“The new version of MXit is part of the BlackBerry app store,” explains MXit Technical Director Marnus Freeman.  “The MXit agreement is directly with BlackBerry. BlackBerry has different agreements with mobile network operators. In RSA you buy a BB data bundle with your BB phone which is a flat rate bundle. BB gets some percentage of this bundle from the operator. On Vodacom BB users therefore get MXit data charges for free.”
