Broadband Infraco requests tenders for implementation of IP core network

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (‘ICASA’) recently awarded Broadband Infraco with an individual electronic communications network services (‘I-ECNS’) licence. This licence allows Broadband Infraco to provide electronic communications network services to other licenced operators with the use of its own fibre optic network infrastructure.

The Broadband Infraco network will be able to carry bandwidth between points-of-presence to all the major cities and towns in Southern Africa. The state-owned enterprise was established under a statutory mandate to increase availability and affordability of access to electronic communications through the provision of both the electronic communication network services and electronic communication services.

Broadband Infraco is now looking for a partner to design , engineer, supply and implement an Internet Protocol (IP) core network.  In a Sunday Times advertisement Broadband Infraco is inviting companies to tender for the project.

Broadband Infraco is one of the companies, along with Neotel/MTN/Vodacom, which is investing in a national backhaul network to create a more bandwidth rich environment in South Africa.
