Telkom recently announced their new rates, and you will pay a few rand more on your total ADSL bill

Telkom announced in June that it has filed its latest tariff adjustments with the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) which will see an overall price increase of 0.8% kick in on 1 August 2010.

Telkom’s monthly DSL (Digital Symmetrical Line) rates, Do Broadband subscriptions and monthly Internet subscription charges will remain unchanged.

Analogue line rental however increases from the current R131.00 to R133.30 which means that you can expect to pay R2.30 more on your overall ADSL bill.  Businesses are harder hit by the new prices, and here analogue line rental rates will increase from R174 to R182.70, an increase of R8.70 per month.

There have been calls for Telkom to do away with compulsory analogue line rental which accompanies its ADSL service, but to date there is no indication that the fixed line provider is seriously considering a ‘naked ADSL’ service.

Calling plans and data services

Closer calling plan prices will remain largely unchanged, but Closer Plan 1 customers will pay R150 per month for the service from August 1 instead of the usual R145 per month.

When it comes to post-paid call charges Telkom subscribers will pay the same in 2010 as they did in 2009.  Both local and long distance fixed line calls remain unchanged in Telkom’s new pricing structure.

Telkom did however reduce the rate of many of its international call destinations, including significant price cuts for calls to destinations like China and Israel.  Call rates to Zimbabwe will however increase.

When it comes to Telkom’s data products Diginet users will enjoy a 5.7% price reduction in August while Telkom’s Megalines and ATM Express customers will have to fork out 7.7% and 9.3% more respectively.
