Slow ADSL speeds? Uncapped to blame?

Have you found your ADSL connection to be slower or more latent than usual? Perhaps those with uncapped accounts are to blame

Many ADSL users have been reporting sluggish connections through a number of different ISPs.

Web Africa was among the ISPs affected and explained that they had experienced problems last week, but that nothing specific to their network could account for any latency or speed issues.

Web Africa was approached for comment, and Web Africa Acting Marketing Executive Cliff Hazel explained that some factors may be beyond their control.

“Last week our peering to Google and Akamai were down, this traffic which would normally be served locally, was therefore being served internationally and putting some strain on our international pipes,” Hazel said.

To address the added demand, Hazel said they shaped peer-to-peer (P2P) traffic to allow other usage to continue.

Both peering links have since been restored, Said Hazel.

“Overall though, uncapped has been putting a lot of strain on DSLAMs [Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexers] around the country, which has unfortunately been affecting users on all networks, especially during peak hours,” said Hazel. “In many areas Telkom is now only allowing 384k connections to limit the congestion.”

Hazel added that they haven’t received any complaints about slow browsing. “If anyone is experiencing an issue, [we] would strongly urge them to contact our call-center and log a query so that we can investigate and resolve the issue.”

Telkom explained that it isn’t able to apply any limitations on the ADSL services supplied by ISPs like WebAfrica, other than the speeds of the lines themselves.

“WebAfrica makes use of an IP Connect service combined with SAIX Dedicated Access. This allows them to offer their users an end to end service (ADSL Access plus Internet Access),” Telkom said.

“Slow ADSL response experienced by users from ISPs with this type of setup can typically be attributed to contention ratios applied by the ISP on their end-to-end service.”
