Recent survey sheds light on what consumers really want when it comes to broadband services in South Africa

Since ADSL was launched in late 2002 the cost associated with broadband services in South Africa came under fire from consumers.  Broadband users pleaded with Telkom, ICASA and even Government to ensure that prices come down and usage limits increase.

Fast forward eight years and pricing remains the most important component of a broadband service in South Africa.  Other aspects of a broadband service which rank high for consumers include download speeds, reliability and usage limits (caps).

A recent telecoms and broadband survey by MyBroadband revealed that 46% of consumers felt that price is the most important component of a broadband offering, followed by reliability (19%) and download speed (14%).

In this survey consumers were asked to order the components of a broadband service from the most important to the least important.  A total of 1084 individuals completed the survey, and an importance percentage was calculated based on the feedback from these consumers.

The following table provides an overview of the results, including the percentage of users which voted for each component as the most important aspect of a broadband service.
