The 2016 South African Online Piracy Survey conducted by MyBroadband revealed that Afrihost, Telkom Internet, and Vox Telecom are the most popular service providers among local pirates.
The online survey was completed by 2,385 IT professionals and tech-savvy South African broadband users.
65% of respondents said they had pirated movies, TV series, music, software, and games over the last 12 months.
The survey showed that local online pirates favour fixed broadband connections, including Telkom’s ADSL and VDSL services, fibre-to-the-home, and Telkom mobile products.
This is hardly surprising, as these products offer high data limits at a relatively low price when compared to other broadband options.
They survey also showed that there was an almost even split of capped and uncapped accounts among online pirates.
South African ISPs offering affordable capped accounts with large data caps is a contributing factor to this trend.
