ATEC Systems and Technologies has unveiled its Maboneng fibre network, offering broadband, managed internet, TV and telephony services.

This follows an announcement in January 2012 that ATEC  had completed the first phase of a fibre network rollout to create South Africa’s first non-gated fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) community in Clifton, Cape Town.

The Maboneng Precinct is a private urban renewal development project on the lower east side of Johannesburg City.

“The FTTH network is designed to be future proof, central to the IP-centric future of the east-side precinct, providing network speeds of up to 100Mbps on standard installations and up to 1024Mbps on customized installations,” said Atec commercial director Gerhard Loots.

Loots explains that users will pay R2,500 for a fibre modem to connect to the network, which will offer them 100Mbps of un-contended bandwidth from the office or home to ATEC’s point-of-presence (POP) in Maboneng.

“From the POP out we currently have a 1Gbps link to Neotel’s data center (DC), which can be increased as needed,” said Loots. “We are busy investigating another backhaul partner in order to create a redundant route from the Maboneng POP.”
