The latest MyBroadband speed test server results revealed that MTN has the best performing mobile broadband network in South Africa. Vodacom and 8ta was ranked second and third respectively.
Using the 141,900 speed test results from its Johannesburg server over the last three months, MyBroadband calculated the average download speed, upload speed and latency for mobile broadband speed tests.
MyBroadband used IP address filtering, survey input and other mechanisms to ensure that the results are accurate and representative for the mobile networks.
MTN’s 3G/LTE network ranked top with an average download speed of 8.7Mbps, followed by Vodacom with 7.4Mbps and 8ta with 3.7Mbps.
The following table provides an overview of the average mobile broadband speeds for the four major networks.
| ISP account | Download (kbps) | Upload (kbps) | Latency (ms) |
| MTN | 8,727 | 2,225 | 103 |
| Vodacom | 7,442 | 1,577 | 68 |
| 8ta | 3,663 | 1,407 | 132 |
| Cell C | 3,416 | 1,169 | 158 |
The high speeds and low latency from MTN and Vodacom is partly related to the operators’ LTE networks.
MyBroadband is in the process of revamping its speed test server, which will include the separation of LTE and 3G/HSPA results.
