Telkom Mobile has unveiled its commercial “LTE at home” trial (aka Home Office LTE), with month-to-month, 24-month, and 36-month contract options on 10GB and 20GB packages.

The Telkom Mobile website highlights that its Home Office LTE service is three times faster than any standard 3G service, accompanied by quality data as well as superior reliability.

Telkom Mobile MD Attila Vitai said that their early analysis shows that their LTE service is performing well.

Download speeds typically range between 20Mbps and 45Mbps, with upload speeds ranging between 5Mbps and 10Mbps, said Vitai.

According to the company’s website its Home Office LTE service is available on month-to-month, 24-month, and 36-month contracts. These packages come with a router with 10GB, 20GB, or 50GB data options.

Telkom Mobile has not published a full price list on its website, but did give the prices for its 10GB and 20GB packages:

  • 10GB – R499 per month
  • 20GB – R699 per month

Vitai explained that they are currently only offering 10GB and 20GB packages to ensure an excellent quality of service. A 50GB package is planned, he said, but it will depend on the usage patterns during the trial.

Vitai said that their fixed broadband LTE service comes with a B593 router, which is suitable to serve numerous users at the same time.

Commercial LTE trial

Vitai said that the commercial LTE trial is aimed at establishing, among other things, what usage patterns are and how many customers can be served per site.

Telkom Mobile’s commercial LTE trial is currently only available in Sunninghill, with plans to extend it to a few more areas in Gauteng in the coming weeks.

Vitai said that they will roll out their commercial LTE service in a phased approach, rather than making it available across its network at the same time.

Whether these entrepreneurs can lay the foundations for a new era in Japanese products though may depend on whether Abe can tear down barriers in a wider business culture that shuns risk and supports the status quo.
