On Digital Media (ODM) launched their TopTV offerings on Saturday, and sold out all their decoders and installation units within the first day.
This tremendous demand for ODM’s TopTV services, priced between R99 and R249 per month, resulted in the company’s call centre and other support systems buckling under the heavy load.
One of the victims of the massive uptake of the new pay-TV offering is the installation system.
ODM currently has an introductory offer of R499 which includes a decoder, satellite dish and installation. This very low pricing went down well with consumers, but some of TopTV’s new clients were surprised by the feedback from the installers.
According to one TopTV subscriber the feedback from two of the official TopTV installers he contacted was ambiguous and worrisome.
“After registering with TopTv they sent me a welcome message and a message with 3 TopTV installers in my area. I then phoned two of the three installers, but both of them said that they have no idea how they will be getting their money for the install,” he said.
“The two installers told me that TopTV has only supplied them with the specifications of the install, but nothing concerning payment or reimbursement. The one installer told me that they would charge me R1000 to install a dish with cabling.”
The TopTV subscribers further described how the installer said it was challenging to reach ODM to gain clarity on the installation charges and reimbursements.
TopTV has however clarified the issue, saying that any installer who is accredited and has been trained by TopTV knows about the payment system.
“Anyone else asking for payment from the subscriber is taking a chance and is NOT an ACCREDITED TopTV installer,” said Melinda Connor, Publicity & PR Manager for TopTV.
