SuperSport debuts eSports

SuperSport will start to broadcast eSports – electronic gaming – on DStv on 8 March.

“eSports is the next frontier in international sport, and SuperSport plans to be there every step of the way,” the company said.

eSports are mind sports driven essentially by video games. Although the genre is small in South Africa, there is a sponsored local professional league.

Internationally, eSports are popular. 100,000 fans recently watched the IEM World Championship in Poland at a venue with giant screens.

In 2015, the League of Legends world championship was broadcast in 19 languages by 40 broadcast partners.

Local research indicates that eSports will soon become ubiquitous.

Highlights of the IEM World Championship event will be broadcast on SuperSport this week.
