ICASA has denied TopTV’s application for three new adult channels
The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) has turned down TopTV’s application to broadcast three new channels with adult content.
ICASA spokesperson Paseka Maleka said that they will provide that satellite pay-TV broadcaster with reasons for denying their request within the next 30 days.
When TopTV first announced they were planning to launch three porn channels to broadcast content from Playboy TV, they were met with much resistance.
Religious groups called for a boycott of the broadcaster, Cosatu appealed to TopTV investor Kopanu ke Matla Investment company to disinvest, and the Film and Publications Board (FPB) said they would oppose TopTV’s plans.
Asked whether they would appeal the decision, TopTV said that they are waiting for ICASA to respond with reasons first.
Maleka said that TopTV is free to appeal the decision after ICASA has provided its grounds for refusing the application.
