TopTV announced the launch of its new action and combat sports channel, Setanta Action (202), at an event in Johannesburg on Thursday (2 November 2012).
In the press statement issued following the event, TopTV said that the new channel will begin broadcasting at 12:00 (noon) on 3 November 2012.
Setanta Action is a 24/7 sports-action channel with a particular focus on combat sports. TopTV said that the content will comprise primarily of live and short-delay events featuring kick-boxing, mixed martial arts, and boxing.
Programming will also include wrestling, action series, action magazine-format shows that feature, among others, fitness and exercise, judo, taekwondo, karate and “other extreme sports.”
According to TopTV, it is the first broadcast platform in Africa to launch the channel.

The launch comes just after the pay TV operator announced that it is looking for an equity partner.
TopTV has repeatedly acknowledged that it is struggling to compete against the sports broadcast by DStv, but always adds that it is working to deliver such content.
“While our sports offering is limited in terms of mainstream sports, we have targeted various niche channels with a specific audience in mind, and these are performing very well for TopTV,” said Ian Woodrow, vice president of channels at TopTV.
“As such, we are delighted to welcome the Setanta Action channel to our sports mix that includes Setanta Africa, Fuel TV (an extreme sports channel), Eurosport News and MUTV (the 24-hour football channel of Manchester United).”
DStv also announced a slew of new channels for its Compact and Premium bouquets just ahead of TopTV’s launch event.
Among the channels DStv subscribers will receive is Blackbelt TV, a martial arts channel.
