Ericsson today demonstrated HSPA Evolution and LTE with speeds peaking over 100 Mbps; LTE voice call made

In live demonstrations in Johannesburg today Ericsson showed off its HSPA+ and LTE network capabilities with theoretical maximum speeds ranging between 21 Mbps and 100 Mbps.

Ericsson’s Senior Manager of Access Solutions Ingolf Meier showed off their 21 Mbps, 42 Mbps and 82 Mbps HSPA+ (aka HSPA Evolved) with actual test-condition speeds of 15 Mbps, 20 Mbps and just over 80 Mbps.

These speeds are high enough for large file downloads and real-time high definition streaming, and Meier pointed out that a dual layer DVD can be downloaded using HSPA+ in around 30 minutes.

For mobile broadband speeds of 100 Mbps and higher the demonstration moved over to LTE where Ericsson’s Praven Reddy demonstrated speeds of just over 100 Mbps using a 100 Mbps capable Samsung LTE dongle.

Reddy pointed out that their network equipment was 150 Mbps capable, but that commercial CPEs – available from Samsung and LG – only support downlink speeds of 100 Mbps.

Using LTE Reddy streamed eight simultaneous high definition videos, adding that the technology allows for a 25 GB Blue-Ray video to be downloaded in around 30 minutes.

At the GSMA World Congress in Barcelona Ericsson demonstrated LTE Advanced (4G) speeds of 1.2 Gbps using 4 carriers of 20 MHz each and 4×4 MIMO.  These speeds are however a long way off without any commercial equipment available yet.

In a surprise move Reddy made a live Voice over LTE (VoLTE) call to a mobile phone on the MTN network.  LTE’s voice capabilities were previously questioned, but Reddy said that they are now rolling out a VoLTE network in the United States.

As is usually the case the network readiness preceded LTE ready handsets, but Reddy said that Ericsson expects the first LTE Multi Mode Smart phones to arrive before the end of 2010.
