Quinton Leigh, MD of Leaf International Communications, talks about upcoming operating system updates for local HTC Android devices

Last month HTC released a statement saying “if your phone was launched this year, we will most likely offer an upgrade for it to the Froyo version.”

HTC went on to specifically mention the Desire and Droid Incredible, phones that were already launched at the time of the announcement, as well as the Evo 4G and myTouch Slide, phones that had yet to be released then.

To find out whether we can look forward to these upgrades in South Africa we spoke to Quinton Leigh, MD of Leaf International Communications. Leaf is the supplier of HTC devices in South Africa.

Leigh confirmed that the HTC Desire would receive the upgrade to Froyo (Android 2.2) from Eclair (Android 2.1). The Legend, released around the same time as the Desire and which also runs Eclair, will not be receiving an upgrade.

The upgrade for the HTC Hero, which has already been confirmed, is "a week away," according to Leigh. No other HTC device is slated to receive upgrades.

When questioned about whether we'll be seeing a device like the EVO 4G in South Africa Leigh said that we can expect to see “something like it” for South African networks.
