Just over a month ago (11 May 2011) Samsung estimated that they would be able to bring their latest Android “superphone,” the Samsung Galaxy S II, to South Africa in July 2011 for a price of R6,699.

At the time the company warned that the prices and dates were estimates that may change.

It also wasn’t specified whether the price estimate referred to the 16GB or 32GB models of the Samsung Galaxy S2, but the fact that the 16GB variant of the first Galaxy S (I9000) was available in SA at a similar price point suggests that Samsung was talking about the 16GB model.

South Africa’s mobile operators have revealed what details they could of the upcoming launch of the device.

Vodacom said that they may have the device in early July, but couldn’t provide any pricing information.

Cell C said that they expect the device in June and plan to sell it on a sub-R500 contract.

MTN said that their target date is for June/July 2011 and provided the following approximate prices for packages that include the Samsung Galaxy S2:

  • MTN 100: R319.00
  • MTN 200: R379.00
  • MTN 350: R479.00
  • MTN 500: R609.00

Virgin mobile provided the following package details for the device, saying that they valued it at R6,099 and plan to have it available in July.

Virgin Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II Classic 300 contract:

  • Starter pack included
  • 1000 Free SMSs worth R600 per month
  • Airtime = R300 for calls or data
  • R320 per month x 24
  • R20 mandatory itemised billing
