MTN’s BlackBerry Internet Service problems stem from the triple cable break in the Indian Ocean

MTN says that the intermittent BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) connection issues on their network are caused by the triple cable break in the Indian Ocean.

MTN is referring to the three cable breaks which occurred on the East Africa Submarine System (EASSy), SEA-ME-WE 3 (SMW3) and the Europe India Gateway (EIG) on 17th February 2012.

“MTN is aware of the intermittent BIS connection issues that some customers are experiencing.  We would like the affected customers to be assured that this matter is receiving priority attention,” says Sidney Arnold, general manager of network operations at MTN SA.

“This [BIS problem] is related to three undersea cable failures experienced during this past weekend.  To curb this, MTN is currently bringing in alternative capacity to the available cables.”

(It should be noted that the cable breaks actually occurred on 17 February already, and not ‘this past weekend’).

Arnold said that MTN anticipates a resolution of the issues within the shortest period possible, looking at all various alternatives.
