Vodacom has quietly ended its 99c per minute prepaid promotion, which leaves Cell C as the only mobile operator with this flat rate.

Vodacom announced its ‘Freedom 99 prepaid tariff’ on 16 May 2012, offering calls to all networks at 99 cents per minute. This came only hours before Cell C announced their new 99c prepaid tariff.

The company later said that that their recently-announced 99c per minute prepaid rate was not a new tariff, but rather a new promotion. At the time Vodacom did not announce any expiry date.

It is understood that this clarification came after the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) was unhappy that Vodacom announced lower prepaid rates without filing these rates with the regulator first.

Vodacom has now confirmed (after a media request) that the promotion had ended on 31 July 2012.

This means that Cell C is the sole mobile operator with a 99c flat rate to all operators and numerous international destinations.
