Is it a camera in a phone, or a phone in a camera?

Samsung has made official their latest offering, the SCH-W880 phone. The remarkable thing about this device is the 12 megapixel extendable camera lens, which makes the device look more like a phone crammed into a camera.

Touted as the first 12MP camera phone with 3x optical zoom, it also features 6x digital zoom, 1280×720 resolution video recording at 30fps and is equipped with a Xenon flash. The 3.3” AMOLED touch screen is used for touch auto focus. Other imaging processes include image stabilization, Smart Auto (automatic selection of scene settings) and face detection.

The interface is based on Samsung’s TouchWiz UI. There are the usual hardware goodies such as HSDPA, WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, and a microSD slot to expand on the 4GB internal memory.

Digital Multimedia Broadcast is also supported but since South Korea is the only country currently supporting this feature (with the EU in the testing phase), it does not bode well for an arrival on SA shores any time soon.
