Apple released an update to their mobile operating system in March 2011, which added the ability to use the iPhone 4 as a portable Wi-Fi hotspot, among other things.
The personal hotspot feature introduced by Apple in iOS 4.3 enabled iPhone 4 users to share their mobile broadband connection with up to 5 other devices in any combination of up to 3 Wi-Fi, 3 Bluetooth, and 1 USB connected device(s).
According to Vodacom, the issue is linked to the access point name (APN) the iPhone uses to connect to Vodacom’s data network.
Most mobile network operators in South Africa use the APN ‘internet’ for their typical mobile broadband customers.
Vodacom’s iPhone 4 customers connect through the ‘iphone.vodacom.za’ APN while MTN subscribers use ‘mymtn’.
If the iPhone 4 doesn’t connect to the proper APN then the tethering and personal hotspot functionality of the device doesn’t work, Vodacom explained.
Vodacom said that they have logged the issue with Apple.
