Summary: Apple is to host an iPhone event at their Cupertino campus on 4 October 2011.

Various technology news outlets, including Ars Technica and AllThingsD, are reporting that they have received invitations to an iPhone media event, which is to be held on 4 October 2011 at Apple’s Cupertino campus in California.

This confirms the latest round of rumours, one of which was a report from AllThingsD that said that Apple would be showcasing the iPhone 5 at a big media event on 4 October 2011.

However, with the invitation only saying, “Let’s talk iPhone,” the rumours that Apple may be introducing more than one iPhone this time round remain unconfirmed.

A slip by former US Vice President Al Gore (who is also an Apple board member) at a recent event in South Africa fed the speculation that Apple may launch both a new iPhone as well as an upgraded iPhone 4.

The event is set to begin at 10h00 Pacific Daylight Time, which translates to 19h00 South African time on 4 October 2011.
