Mobile operators in South Africa reveal their plans for Google’s latest Android smartphone
Google’s new Galaxy Nexus Android 4 “Ice Cream Sandwich” smartphone is due for release in South Africa during 2012 on Vodacom, possibly as soon as February.
Vodacom’s head of corporate comms, Nomsa Thusi, recently told MyBroadband that they don’t have price information available yet but will advise about such details closer to the launch.
Virgin Mobile may also be getting a small volume of devices, the mobile virtual network operator said. A spokesperson for Virgin Mobile said that they couldn’t confirm pricing or timeframes, but would “probably mostly” offer the stock they get through their online channel.
Based on the feedback we received, South Africans interested in getting the latest Android smartphone supported directly by Google would need to watch Vodacom or Virgin Mobile.
South Africa’s other mobile networks either wouldn’t or couldn’t divulge details on their plans for the Galaxy Nexus.

8ta said that they couldn’t comment on pricing, or if and when they would be bringing in the Galaxy Nexus.
MTN’s Mike Faron, general manager: products, services and innovation, said that they too weren’t in a position to comment on the Galaxy Nexus.
“Suffice to say that MTN will announce to market on any developments in this regard when the time is appropriate,” Faron said.
Cell C did not provide feedback by the time of publication.
