Cell C and 8ta have confirmed that they expect to receive the Galaxy Nexus early this year
Cell C and 8ta have revealed that they plan to have available Google’s latest Android device, the Galaxy Nexus, during the first quarter of 2012.
According to Cell C, they expect to receive the device at the end of the quarter, while 8ta said they plan to launch in line with the device ramp-up during Q1 2012.
MTN, on the other hand, said that it doesn’t currently have plans to launch the Galaxy Nexus in SA.
“At this stage MTN has not enlisted the Galaxy Nexus, but as per our evaluation process, will continue to review possible enlisting – more so in 2012 with the increasing traction of Android,” said Mike Fairon, general manager for product innovation and development at MTN SA.
Vodacom is the only other operator to confirm that it has plans to bring the smartphone to South Africa, with Virgin Mobile saying that they might get a small volume of devices.
The Nexus line of Android devices are considered Google devices, though they are produced in co-operation with hardware companies.
Samsung manufactured the Galaxy Nexus, and it announced towards the end of last year (2011) that the device would be available in SA from “early Q1 2012.”
According to Samsung’s earlier announcement, the Galaxy Nexus will retail for between R6,999 and R7,299.
Cell C said that their pricing will be announced closer to the time.
