The 7-inch Kindle Fire HD tablet PC from Amazon is set to become available at retail in South Africa on 13 June 2013 for R2,999.95.

This price is reportedly a special launch price, and is expected to increase to around R3,200 after 16 June.

While there are quite a few options for smaller tablets in South Africa, the Kindle Fire’s main competition are the other low cost devices in the 7-inch tablet category.

The table below summarises the specifications, US retail prices, and South African retail prices of Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD, Google’s Nexus 7, and the Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 2 7.0.

8-inch tablet PCs

While tablets with larger screens typically have much higher prices than their 7-inch competitors, it is still worth comparing them to see what the extra money buys you.

The following comparison is especially interesting following the recent announcement of Acer’s 8-inch Windows 8 tablet.

According to Acer, the device is expected to become available in South Africa towards the end of June in both its 32GB and 64GB variants.
