Fastest fingers first: Type the fastest SMS in South Africa (in proper English, not lolspeak) to earn your Protea colours
LG Electronics (LG) recently announced the start of the 2010 LG Mobile World Cup South African Championship.
In its third year the competition is to attract participants from 20 countries, an increase from the 13 countries that took part in 2009.
The competing countries include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Croatia, Guatemala, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Morocco, Nigeria, Panama, Portugal, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand, Philippines, the US, Venezuela and Vietnam.
Qualifying rounds for the local competition started on Monday, 30 August 2010. Contestants are required to register and log on to the competition’s WAP site.
Eight of South Africa’s fastest and most accurate texters go through to the National Championship to be held at the end of September 2010. The two top texters will qualify to compete at the World Championship to be held in New York during January 2011, LG said.
At the event, held to launch LG’s new “Chatterbox Plus” messaging/feature phone and kick off the texting competition, LG said that only properly spelled English words would be used and not abbreviated “SMS-language.”
Other than the $100 000 prize money, South Africa’s fastest texter will have the opportunity to challenge the current Guinness World Record® established last year by Pedro Matias of Portugal, said LG.
Matias set a new world record by accurately texting a 264-character sentence in just two minutes.
Kgothatso Moerane and Natalie Witoslawski earned their senior national colours for representing South Africa in last year’s Mobile World Cup. According to Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) Moerana and Witoslawski didn’t qualify for Protea colours due to certain requirements that weren’t met.
The MSSA said the two people that make next year’s national team would be eligible for Protea colours rather than just national colours. Colin Webster, president of MSSA, explained that these are the same colours awarded to South Africa’s national sports teams.
The prizes for the local leg are as follows:
First prize: R50 000 + Chatterbox Plus handset
Second prize: R20 000 + Chatterbox Plus handset
Third prize: R10 0000 + Chatterbox handset
