Who is Faith Muthambi?

South Africa’s new communications minister is Faith Muthambi – here is where she comes from, and what some experts say about her appointment

Faith Muthambi

President Jacob Zuma announced his new cabinet on 25 May 2014, which included the relatively unknown Azwihangwisi Faith Muthambi as the new communications minister.

Muthambi will head up the restructured communications department, which has been changed to include more functions.

The new department of communications will be formed out of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa), the SABC, GCIS, Brand SA, and the Media Development and Diversity Agency.

Faith Muthambi’s political career

Muthambi had a long political career before being named the new communications minister. Some of her prominent positions include:

  • Member of SANSCO (1989-1990);
  • Tshimbupfe ANCYL branch Secretary (1991-1992);
  • Executive Committee member of Tshimbupfe ANC branch (1992-1993);
  • Deputy Secretary of the Vuwani Zone (1993-1999);
  • REC member of Vhembe ANCYL (2003-2005);
  • Provincial Treasurer ANCYL, Limpopo (2005-2008);
  • ANC WL PEC member, Limpopo (2008-to-date);
  • REC Member of the ANC Vhembe region (2006-to-date);
  • Member of Parliament of South Africa and the Pan African Parliament (April 2009 – Present); and
  • ANC Whip on Communication Portfolio Committee.

She was one of the seven ANC MPs who were nominated for the ad hoc committee to consider President Jacob Zuma‘s submissions on the public protector’s report on his Nkandla home.

Muthambi holds a B Proc from the University of Venda (1993-1996), and various other certifications and qualifications from UPTA, Wits Business School and UNIVEN.

Industry comment about Faith Muthambi

DA MP Marian Shinn said that Faith Muthambi has extensive ICT knowledge through her work on the portfolio committee.

“I found her to be a person of integrity. She has a sharp legal mind and is disinclined to take explanations and glossy presentations at face value,” said Shinn. “She will do well as Minister of Communications and I wish her well.”

World Wide Worx MD Arthur Goldstuck said that Stella Tembisa Ndabeni-Abrahams gives some continuity in the communications department, but that seems to be the only obvious positive in the communications appointments.
