Bloggers take on local spammer
The local blogging community has lashed out at a local spammer.
The South African blogging community has launched an attack on Deal-a-Day, a website which sent out what appears to be thousands of unsolicited email messages.
The email states that, “You have been introduced to us by a friend through our viral email campaign and are now automatically subscribed to receive an email with our special deal of the day.”
There is no mention of the supposed ‘friend’ and it is unclear why no opt-in email was sent to users to confirm whether they would like to receive promotional emails from Deal-a-Day.
Well known blogger Stii wrote: “Going through my junk folder I see you’ve been sending me shit since Al Gore invented the internet. I’ve never visited your site, nor did I subscribe to your deals. Well, how the hell could I subscribe to get your daily deals if I have never visited your site.”
“...this nonsense has to stop” said Rob Stokes from Quirk, who founded the Spam Action Group and is in the early stages of putting the ECT Act to the test by prosecuting a well known spammer.
In another post on Muti some bloggers reported receiving multiple spam emails for Deal-a-Day.
In the email, MarketingDB is mentioned, but the company said that Deal-a-Day is merely using their marketing platform and that it is not involved in generating the email database.
Deal-a-Day could not be reached for comment.
