BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer file sharing technology that lets users upload and download files to one another over the Internet. It uses “torrent” files to tell a BitTorrent download client which files to download and where to find the required information about the users that are sharing the files.
Top 10 rankings for torrents are not uncommon, with torrent indices often listing the most popular torrents they host on their home pages. However, getting the necessary data to generate a list of the top torrents for a particular period, whether weekly, monthly, or yearly, requires either a lot of research or willingness from indices to share their stats.
Three torrent index sites, TorLock, Torrentfunk, and Yourbittorrent have been willing to share their statistics with MyBroadband, revealing which torrents on their sites are most popular among South African users.
TorLock boasts that it is the biggest source of verified torrents on the Internet with over 500,000 torrent files in its database. It also offers to pay users $1 for every fake they can find. According to TorLock’s Google Analytics stats, 10,460 South Africans visited the site in July.
Torrentfunk focuses on the latest torrent releases on the web, claiming to host “over 3 million of the latest and best Torrents on the web.”According to its administrators the site has over 100 uploaders and promises users the latest releases as soon as they come out. 13,456 South Africans visited Torrentfunk in July 2011 according to the site’s Google Analytics stats.
Yourbittorrent is a new site that’s agreed to share their stats and report seeing 16,213 South African visitors during August.
The table below lists the top 15 torrents from each of the sites.
