Latest online publisher statistics reveal the movers and shakers in the local Internet market
Internet access and broadband penetration rates in South Africa continue to increase, and this shows in the constant increase in the traffic which local websites attract. Over the last few months there have also been a few movers and shakers in the local Internet space, all showing strong growth and taking on the more established brands.
One of the biggest movers in October was the revamped Times Live website, which under the guidance of newly appointed General Manager for Digital Elan Lohmann, raced up the OPA rankings with a 73% month on month growth. Times Live now ranks close to IOL News, one of Lohmann’s first targets in his quest to become the premier news website in the country.
A new OPA member, TEAMtalk Media’s Football365, jumped straight into the Top 10 with over 1-million unique monthly visitors, showing the reach of football news online. Supersport also showed strong growth which is most likely linked to all the high profile sporting events last month.
The following table provides an overview of the top websites and mobile destinations in South Africa according to the Nielsen Netratings Total Traffic for OPA Publishers in October 2009.
