Six police officers have been arrested in the Indian state of Goa after an alleged drug dealer claimed in an Internet video clip that they sold him confiscated narcotics, an official said Thursday.
Goa’s deputy police chief Ravindra Yadav said the officers were being held on suspicion of conspiracy and corruption after a probe into the allegations made in secretly-filmed footage posted on the video sharing site YouTube.
Five of the six were suspended earlier this month when the allegations came to light. A sixth was suspended this week.
All six worked in the former Portuguese colony’s drugs squad, which was set up to combat the sale of illegal narcotics.
The YouTube video has caused a stir in Goa, where there have been previous allegations of police turning a blind eye to drugs.
The mother of a British teenager whose body was found on a Goa beach in 2008 alleged that police were initially reluctant to open a murder inquiry because of their close links with local drugs gangs.
Scarlett Keeling, 15, was found to have taken a cocktail of drink and drugs before she died.
Other allegations include police officers shielding a known drug dealer, allowing him to avoid capture for 10 years.
