Google Trends provides data on the keywords that are most often searched for in Google Search. Data for specific regions, including South Africa, is also made available.

Trends data is updated daily, according to Google. The search giant adds a disclaimer for the data in Trends with the statement: “The data Trends produces may contain inaccuracies for a number of reasons, including data-sampling issues and a variety of approximations that are used to compute results.”

The table below shows the top search terms originating from South Africa for the 30 days ending Sunday, 8 August 2010. It also shows the local as well as worldwide rising searches which indicates those terms that have shown a significant increase in popularity over the previous 30 days.

Very little has changed in the top searches when comparing the most popular searches of the last month to those of the last three and twelve months.

As can be expected, search terms like “world cup” and “fifa” no longer rank among the top searches in South Africa, making way instead for “news” and “jobs” at the bottom end of the list.
