Steve Song’s Many Possibilities blog graphically illustrates Spectrum Allocation and Assignment in South Africa
Steve Song’s Many Possibilities blog is well known for its excellent undersea cable map and information page, and for interested readers Song has just added another very handy online tool to the site.
Song’s “great libre spectropedia for glorious African spectrum transparency lobby” page provides visitors with a comprehensive illustration of the Spectrum Allocation and Assignment in South Africa.
Song explained that he launched this project because the Excel spreadsheets made available by ICASA for spectrum allocation and assignment are not particularly user friendly, and there was a need for a more usable resource.
Song then decided to develop a Spectrum Allocation and Assignment system as a public resource to make it easy to see exactly which spectrum has been assigned/allocated by ICASA.
Song however warns that despite the fact that the system is live and provides a fairly comprehensive overview of spectrum allocation in South Africa, not all the relevant information has not been included in the database yet. This will however happen soon.
According to Song’s website 2010 will not only see a survey of spectrum management in South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Morocco, Brazil, and India, but also a targeted campaign for specific blocks of spectrum to be opened up.
