2015 saw significant developments in the BitTorrent scene, with crackdowns and takeovers causing a number of popular sites to disappear from the web.

This has affected TorrentFreak’s annual list of the most popular torrent sites, with “dubious newcomers” making the cut.

Changes in the BitTorrent space in 2015 included the hostile takeover of EZTV’s primary domain.

The Pirate Bay also suffered nearly two months of downtime at the start of 2015, causing it to slip in the rankings.

YTS, also known as Yify, was also shutdown after New Zealand law enforcement threatened the site’s operator with a multi-million dollar lawsuit.

Another significant development, which may not have affected the rankings, was the shutdown of Demonii.

Demonii, the biggest BitTorrent tracker in the world, was run by the same person who operated YTS.

TorrentFreak also gave an honourable mention to Rutracker, which it said would have been in the top 5 if the chart wasn’t limited to only English language sites.
