The pope will launch his Instagram account on 19 March under the handle Franciscus, Italian newswire service ANSA reported.

According to the report, the confirmation comes from the Prefect for Communications, Msgr Dario Viganò, who was speaking to Vatican radio on 15 March.

TechCrunch reported that Pope Francis held a private audience with Instagram founder Kevin Systrom during February.

They spoke about the ability for images to unite people across cultures and languages, and Pope Francis has said that the Internet can help people be better citizens.

“Access to digital networks entails a responsibility for our neighbour whom we do not see but who is nonetheless real and has a dignity which must be respected,” he said.
