Earthquakes, cricket, the budget speech and the egg dominated searches in South Africa

Along with the rain, February also brought with it laughter, tears, groans and gasps. Google Zeitgeist, a tool that provides insight into search trends on the web, shows what South Africans searched for during the second month of 2011.

While we were grabbing our umbrellas here in South Africa, the devastating earthquake that took place in Christchurch, New Zealand captured headlines across the globe. This tragic event takes first and second place on the list of fastest rising SA searches from the last seven days.

However, in relation to other recent breaking news, results show that Egypt receives the most South African search interest from the last 90 days ahead of Libya, Christchurch and Tunisia.

In terms of recent natural disasters, the cyclone in Australia comes out tops followed by the earthquake in Chile last year, the quake in New Zealand on the 22nd of February, the earthquake in Haiti and lastly the volcanic ash cloud in Iceland.

Despite developments abroad, South African users have still been keen to find out how the 2011 Budget Speech will affect them, as reflected by the search term claiming the number three spot on the list.

On a lighter note, South Africa’s preoccupation with sport is once again evident with ‘superbru’, a sports prediction game, ranking fourth followed by the Cricket World Cup in fifth position. ‘Cricinfo’, which features in seventh place, is a site where fans can watch cricket and view the latest statistics.

Clearly Lady Gaga’s meat outfit at the VMAs last year wasn’t enough of a shock tactic for the alternative popstar – so enter the egg.

Claiming the need for a  ‘rebirth’, the controversial singer decided to arrive at the 2011 Grammy Awards encased in an egg carried by a few members of her wacky entourage.

SA searches for Lady Gaga peaked soon after her appearance, with ‘lady gaga egg’ and ‘lady gaga grammys’ appearing as popular search terms.
