Playlist Central allows South Africans to listen to their choice of music, free of charge
A free online music source aimed at South Africans launched recently. The service is called Playlist Central, allowing users to listen to a selection of 22,000 songs.
“We offer this free music source to the community in an attempt to alleviate piracy,” explained Playlist Central’s Muhammad Ebrahim.
Ebrahim said that their business model functions similarly to international online music services such as Grooveshark, iTunes and Amazon.
“Any user can register a free account giving them access to our current music archive containing 22,000 songs compromising of every album released commercially in 2011, the top 100 for 2010, the top 100 for 2009 and the top 1,000 albums of all time,” says Ebrahim.
“The system currently also holds several South African artists including Prime Circle, Saron Gas, Parlotones, Just Jinjer, Springbok Nude Girls and Lark to mention but a few.”
The Playlist Central system allows registered users to browse by “artist > albums > song title”. Users have the choice to listen to an entire album or just one song.
“The user can also upload music to the server as well as music from their band via the ‘more’ page. The more page also contains information on how to install applications on Android phones and tablet PCs, BlackBerry PlayBook, or iPad, iPhone or iPods,” said Ebrahim.
