IS Labs challenges users to submit ideas to make the South African Internet better
Internet Solutions has launched an initiative called IS Labs which it hopes will challenge subscribers to submit ideas to make the Internet better in South Africa.
“Anyone who uses the Web regularly or would like to use it, has ranted over one issue or another in this regard. Instead of talking yourself in circles and just to your friends, IS Labs gives you a chance to not only voice out your annoyances but suggest how it could be better. Seems fair, right?,” IS Labs states on its website.
The company promises users that their ideas will be heard and that they will be able to track the progress of these ideas.
A few ideas which have been submitted so far include:
- “Wouldn’t it be great if an ADSL user with a cap could pick say five websites which would be excluded from their international cap?”
- “Since Telkom introduced the 3GB Cap, hosting providers started applying it to their packages as well. This makes choosing a local hosting provider a dangerous business. What if you get Slashdotted, what if you get ddosed? ISPs should offer either a far higher cap on local bandwidth (something comparable with overseas hosts) or provide a flat data rate, at a reasonable price, for such hosting so it can be easily afforded for application developers to deploy services at local providers.”
- “I think IS should offer VoIP over mobile phones using WLANs. This will be a massive business – especially if we can control the media at the central AP. Clearly, overflow to GSM voice mailbox will be essential.”
Currently the most popular idea is “Split Routing”: “Wouldn’t it be great if ISPs could automatically split local and international traffic, then bill us separately for each, at the different rates. This would not only make bandwidth more affordable but would also encourage local mirror usage, thereby reducing bottlenecks on international connectivity.”
More about the ideas and how to get involved can be read on the IS Labs website: http://www.islabs.co.za/
