TorLock and TorrentFunk have revealed the most popular torrent downloads among South Africans using their websites during April 2012.
Both sites offer a searchable database of “torrent” files which are required by BitTorrent client applications to download content using the peer-to-peer network.
Such a site is known as a BitTorrent index.
Many indices publish global rankings of their top downloads, but precious little data is available about the torrenting habits of South Africans.
TorLock said that 43,035 of the unique visitors to their site were South Africans, according to Google Analytics, while TorrentFunk reported 52,487 visitors from SA.
Torrent files are uploaded by the users of the sites, with TorrentFunk boasting over 500,000 torrents and an automated verification system based on download frequency, file size, and “other relevant factors.”
TorLock claims to list only verified torrents, offering a $1 reward for every “fake” spotted. On 23 May 2012, the TorLock front page stated that it hosts 619,460 verified torrents.
