Exclusive Books launched a social bookselling platform called “Stickers” today (21 June 2012) that it says is a first for South African retail.

Users unlock discounts on products offered through the Exclus1ves website by rating, sharing, or attaching smileys to the product.

The head of digital retail at Exclusive Books, Ben Williams, explained that smileys are the virtual currency of Exclus1ves. They are earned by dragging “activity” stickers onto products.

These activities include rating (1–5 stars) and sharing (Twitter, Facebook, E-mail). Users can share a product on every platform once per day and also earn smileys by visiting the site every day.

Members of the Exclusive Books rewards programme, “Fanatics”, earn rewards faster than non-members. Details on how many smileys are earned per activity and how many smileys are required to earn discounts are available in an FAQ on the Exclusive Books website.

After earning smiley stickers, these may then be attached to a product to unlock discounts for it.

“This is our answer to Groupon,” Williams said.

Williams said that there are plans to add more stickers to the platform, such as:

  • book-specific stickers;
  • campaign stickers;
  • corporate gift stickers;
  • celebrity and author recommendation stickers;
  • book of the month stickers;
  • Easter egg mystery stickers; and
  • stickers to buy, sell, trade.

Exclusive Books published the following infographic on its website to explain how the system works:
