A tweet from the official Twitter account of The Presidency of the Republic of South Africa, saying “OH NO!! I’m missing out on @IdolsSA. I’m far away in another timezone. #sadness”, causes a backlash from local Twitter users.

The tweet from the “PresidencyZA” account, which happened shortly after the Idols show ended on Sunday night, drew a flood of responses from disappointed South Africans.

“Idols really shouldn’t be your priority,” said Mike Sharman.

“It was supposed to be OH NO! I’m missing Limpopo books discussion on SABC 1,” said Mr. Monono.

Other tweets included “Haybo wt happened to running the country?”, “God help us” and “This is what The Presidency is worried about?”

Other users took a more humorous approach about the tweet. “Next year audition for Idols *umshini wam*,” said Christian Steyl.  “Looking to wife an idol?” joked user ‏@Zach_Mametja.

“If someone told me this morning that @PresidencyZA watches Idols and Ernie would win The Open, I’d have believed the former,” said Justin Lawrence.

At 20:20 the PresidencyZA tweeted “The last tweet was not an official tweet from The Presidency or the President but rather an administrative error. Our apologies.”
