The latest Effective Measure statistics reveal which online activities are the most popular among South African Internet users

The November 2012 Effective Measure statistics revealed that South Africans mainly use the Internet for e-mail, online banking, obtaining information, reading news and social networking.

Effective Measure, the official traffic measurement partner of the Digital Media and Marketing Association (DMMA), provides accurate traffic statistics for South Africa’s top websites.

The statistics revealed that 90% of South African Internet users make use of e-mail, while 70% of local netizens do online banking.

The following list gives an overview of what South Africans use the Internet for.

  2. Banking – 70.16%
  3. Research / Obtaining information – 64.95%
  4. Reading news / magazine articles on-line – 61.93%
  5. Social Networking – 51.54%
  6. Shopping – 34.50%
  7. Job Search – 33.64%
  8. Directory Services – 27.39%
  9. Chat – 26.16%
  10. Music downloads – 26.05%
  11. Instant Messaging – 22.96%
  12. Listen to the radio online – 15.21%
  13. Watch TV and Videos online – 14.65%
  14. Podcast / Video downloads – 13.68%
  15. Blogging – 10.69%
  16. Share Trading – 7.99%
  17. Dating – 3.49%
  18. Gambling – 2.17%
