A new legislation in Ethiopia is set to criminalise the use of Voice Over IP (VoIP) services within the country.

This means that any usage of Skype or Google Voice could potentially result in a prison sentence for Ethiopian citizens.

The legislation aims to instil closer monitoring on all communication in the country, where previously VoIP services were out of the government’s control.

Not only does the law prohibit the use of VoIP services, but it also enables the state-owned Ethio Teleco to prohibit the use of video chatting, social media, email and any other data transfer service capable of communicating information.

The Ethiopian government has deemed the law necessary for security reasons.
