Amazon appear to be entering new markets with their reported acquisition of UpNext.

The start-up UpNext, models maps into 3D, and is said to have been bought by Amazon for approximately $2.5 million.

UpNext uses Android-native maps, and although the service only currently caters for US cities, the reported deal should allow them to branch out into other territories.

With Amazon having made this purchase speculation is that they may be planning to launch a more robust Kindle that would allow for a third-party Android app, like the maps from UpNext, to be downloaded.

This move also points to the possibility of an Amazon smartphone in the near future.
