The Russian version of Wikipedia is experiencing a blackout in protest of proposed legislation that will allow the Russian government to censor certain sites and pages online.
If the law passes, the government will create a federal agency tasked with maintaining a list of banned sites.
The front page of the Russian Wikipedia now shows a censored image, with Russian text saying: “Imagine a world without free knowledge.”
The site will remain barred throughout Tuesday (10 July 2012).
