In an effort to clamp down on API (application programming interface), Twitter has removed itself from Tumblr’s “Find people you know section”.
The function would usually search Twitter, Facebook and Gmail to find users who also have Tumblr accounts, though now only the latter two remain.
This is an extension of Twitter’s new guidelines to put a tighter control on third-party apps and programs accessing the microblogging platform.
The same thing happened to Instagram last month (July), as the popular picture sharing app was forced to remove Twitter from its friend-finding controls.
An official statement was released from Tumblr:
“To our dismay, Twitter has restricted our users’ ability to “Find Twitter Friends” on Tumblr. Given our history of embracing their platform, this is especially upsetting. Our syndication feature is responsible for hundreds of millions of tweets, and we eagerly enabled Twitter Cards across 70 million blogs and 30 billion posts as one of Twitter’s first partners. While we’re delighted by the response to our integrations with Facebook and Gmail, we are truly disappointed by Twitter’s decision.”
