Africa’s growing mobile user-base is getting a boost from Google, which will allow users to receive emails through text messages.

Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya will be the first countries to get the service, which will see users get their Gmail emails for free via text messages, with the cost to reply being the same as a normal text message.

“We don’t want to just come in and start looking for how to generate profit,” said Google’s Nigeria marketing manager Affiong Osuchukwu. “We consider (sub-Saharan Africa) to be an investment region. We know we have to invest resources and time to develop the market in order for the market to become valuable to us in a way that we can do business.”
